How to Train Your Dragon

This was OK. Not bad, not great. Just OK. Not a Shrek, or a Toy Story or even an UP. Just OK. Like a Monsters Vs Aliens, or a Meet the Robinsons, just OK.

Like the poor kid who wants a Barbie, but a Cindy is under the tree. It’ll do. It wasn’t what they really wanted, but they’ll play with it until something better comes along.

Maybe it would have been better in 3D, maybe if I was in the mood for an animation, maybe I’m just a harsh critic. Maybe I’ve just watched Toy Story too many times, but this didn’t really do it for me, or my 3 year old Madeline for that matter.

Kung Fu Panda

I’d forgotten how good this one was. I think it’s one of the few animations from the last 10 years that Madeline doesn’t own, so therefore my only viewing was the last time we played it.

As I was unable to get a good support for “How to Train Your Dragon” I went over the back catalogue and came up with this.

At the time many critics were a bit harsh on this film, claiming a simple storyline weak characters and poor plot developement. Well toddlers and potheads don’t care about those things. They want a film to be colourful and funny with lots of memorable moments, and Kung Fu Panda delivers.

So remember “there is no charge for awesomeness” ,  but it gets Po a 8.5/10

Old Dogs

Robin Williams and John Travolta must have better things to do than make poor Family Comedies like this. It seemed to have undeveloped plots as well as some uninterested acting. I would not really recommend anyone bother with this film. Save yourself money and brain cells by watching a test pattern instead, or rent something from 20 years ago when Robin Williams still was funny.

Alice in Wonderland

For some reason this film didn’t hook me. We were fairly busy but I just couldn’t get into it. Now I know I am also not the target audience for this film, but with a 3 year old I do watch lots of kids films. Maybe Johnny Depp was trying too hard. Maybe Tim Burton was trying to make it too dark (or burtonesque). I don’t know why it just didn’t seem to do it for me. Madeline loved it though, so I guess I’ll give it a bit better mark

Up in the Air

This is a harmless little film, a good way to kill a night at home. It’s not groundbreaking in any way shape or form, but it’s also not a predictable chick flick. george Clooney plays George Clooney as well as he seems to in all his films, supported well by Vera Famiga and Anna Kendrick in her 1st adult role.

And I liked the ending – not predictable at all.

Shutter Island

I actually saw this one a few weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Although with subsequent viewings I think I asked too many questions and looked too deeply for clues. For those who haven’t seen it I won’t go into this too deeply, but after 1st viewing i was sure I understood the plot. With my 2nd and 3rd viewings I tried to justify what I thought was going on and only confused myself.

Anyway I think the biggest question Shutter Island ask’s is “Where is Leo’s Oscar”. He must be the best actor of his generation and surely deserves one soon.
