Shutter Island

I actually saw this one a few weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Although with subsequent viewings I think I asked too many questions and looked too deeply for clues. For those who haven’t seen it I won’t go into this too deeply, but after 1st viewing i was sure I understood the plot. With my 2nd and 3rd viewings I tried to justify what I thought was going on and only confused myself.

Anyway I think the biggest question Shutter Island ask’s is “Where is Leo’s Oscar”. He must be the best actor of his generation and surely deserves one soon.

Stars at Last

Just a quicky to say we had a 100% starry night last night, not a cloud, no moon and lots of shooting stars. It reminded me why I run the Drive In.

Re open Cairns Drive In

Theres been a bit in the news about driveins lately, more specifically the reopening of the Cairns Drive In. Well guys, unfortunately I think you’ll be stuck with just me and the old Rodeo. It ain’t gonna happen. With 13 driveins left operating in Australia, Cairns is lucky to have one on it’s doorstep, many cities of Cairns size don’t.

It’s not really a question of whether people would go, or if it’s economically viable. The land is simply worth too much money. If I could rent it for even twice the amount of the Rodeo I’d be a happy man and driving a brand new ute. But the land is worth far more to a developer to put units there than he could ever get from runnin g a drive in.

So visit the Rodeo while it’s still there, and remember IT IS CAIRNS DRIVE IN CINEMA!!

Avatar

My advice with Avatar is to limit your viewing. The first time I saw it I was amazed by the brilliance of the special effects, blown away by the restrained but  perfect use of 3d and engrossed in the topical storyline.

After viewing number 5 or 6 it all seemed pretty run of the mill and overrated. Gaping holes were appearing in the highly unoriginal storyline and questions were arising about it’s general integrity. It was appearing to be more like a cross between “Dances with Wolves” and “Pocahontas” than the highest grossing film of all time.

So I say to you, keep the memory and don’t rent it on DVD for a few years.

Percy Jackson – the Lightning thief

This film surprised me, I wasn’t expecting too much. I was thinking it was just another film on the “Harry Potter” bandwagon, which it was.

However this one was actually entertaining and wasn’t made for only the readers of the books. Starring some no name teens, with small roles from Pierce Brosnan and Uma Thurman, it was well acted. The Special Effects were good, if a little constrained by the films budget.

Generally not my kind of movie but I give it a 6.5/10
